Working Notes

A perfect throwing clay for larger pieces, even when pulling thin edges. It produces clean lines and slab builds well, slightly better suited to smaller hand building wares. For more on the clays glaze fits, see product attachments.

It turns fully black at 1200°C.

Health & Safety

As the clay contains crystalline silica avoid inhaling the dust from dried out clay. Wear a P3 mask, wash hands after use and clean up using a damp sponge. Dust off dirty clothes and aprons outside.

Best black clay

Very nice to hand build with, takes small detail very well. Fires a very good black, not brown black, but actual black. Mostly I’ve been firing it without glaze as has a lovely surface and have simply beeswaxed my pieces.

Fabulous black clay

I have been using sibelco black clay only recently and it is now a firm favourite. It is fantastic to throw with and I really like leaving parts unglazed for texture on finished pieces. It is definitely best at cone 6 because it stays grey at cone 06.

Good throwing and hand building clay

I am new to textured clay, and found this clay easy to work with. It is forgiving both when throwing and hand building.

Love It

Always works at high or low temps. Wouldn’t use any other smooth black clay.
