Thinners are used to thin the spirit medium in a lustre. This may be needed if it has dried with age, or with some lustre colours the addition of thinners is needed for the application.

Working notes:
To prevent overthinning a bottle of lustre, it would be sensible to mix a little amount of lustre and thinners independently on an artist pallet or on glass. Use a soft haired paint brush or liner brush for application. Wares should be cleaned and dry before application. Brush evenly for best results being careful not to overload with the lustre. Allow the ware to dry completely before placing in the kiln.

To avoid disappointment, we do advise testing before applying to your final wares and use precision scales when thinning the solution for greater accuracy.

Example: Using precision scales, 2 grams of mother of pearl lustre to 0.3 grams of thinner will create a succesful solution

Health and Safety:
Thinners is a spirit which gives off a 'heady' smell. We would recommend wearing a mask with A1/A2 filters (EN14387:2004) when applying. Store bottles in a well-ventilated area or even outside. A sensible idea for institutions or a business is the purchase of a specially designed cupboard which is lockable and is fire proof.
