This glaze could be potentially safe for dinner/tableware. To be certain, you would need to submit your wares for testing at a reputable laboratory. In the UK, the emphasis in law is to the ‘maker’ who takes responsibility for the food/dinner worthiness of a glazed or unglazed ceramic ware.

For further reading, please read our knowledge base article "Food Safety in Ceramics".

Health & Safety

Lead Free.

Refer to each SDS below for the individual hazards of each glaze.

General Advice:

When handled sensibly, a 'brush-on' glaze presents no serious health issues, but to be safe, do not ingest the liquid and avoid contact with your skin and eyes.

A powder or dried brush-on glaze presents a hazard. It may contain crystalline silica and other materials, which, when inhaled, can cause long-term damage to the lungs or other health problems. We suggest when working with powders or when cleaning, wear an FFP3/P3 mask and filter and use a wet sponge.

Best go-to glaze

Not sure what magic is in this glaze but it performs really well. Ive had the brush on and now the powder, both work well. I was concerned that mixing up a large quantity of brush on myself wouldn't be the same but it came out fine.

The thing I like best about it is that it works well with a thin application. It doesn't streak when you brush it on and it behaves so well with other glazes. I even use it under fussy glazes and it seems to sort them out.

Great with Sibelco speckled clays

Works brilliantly with Sibelco chocolate speckle and throwing speckled clays: the speckles come through the glaze beautifully. Also works well with layers of coloured clays.

A great glaze that works well with my stoneware clay bodies

I fire to cone 5 with a hold, this seems like a great, well-behaved glaze that does interesting things when overlapped with some of the Vitraglaze colours. Unlike another basic white I have this one has not crawled or flaked off when in contact with other, brush on glazes. It's now my go-to white and I'm ordering more so I can make up a really big bucket! Has a nice satin finish at my temperature - not a gloss. It feels lovely in the hand :)
