1) Take a small amount of clay and
roll it into a ball that fits just inside
your palm.
2) Gently push your thumb into the
centre of the clay and pinch between
your finger and thumb.
Work from the centre, out towards
the edges.
3) As the bowl begins to form, support
in the palm of your opposite hand
while gently smoothing into a bowl
shape, trying to keep the walls as
even as possible.
4) Use your finger to smooth the edges
of the bowl. The bowl does not need
to be perfectly round, rustic is beautiful!
1) On a large piece of paper (or baking
parchment), draw the outline of the
desired shape for your cheese board
and cut out (we went with 20cm x
15cm with neck of handle starting
7cm in from each side).
2) Using rolling guides, roll out around
1kg clay. Allow clay to dry to a leather
hard state (firm to the touch but still
has a bend in it).
3) Using your paper cut out as a
template, mark the outline and cut
out the clay.
4) Using a round cutter, cut out a hole
in the handle shape (it can be used
for hanging the board for storage
or for placing the chutney bowl in
when serving).
5) Run a wet finger around the edge of
the cheese board for a nice, smooth
edge. Allow clay to dry completely
before bisque firing at 1100ยฐC.
6) After bisque firing, brush on 2-3 coats
of VitraGlaze Earthenware glaze. We
Used White Zircon.
TIP* Masking tape can be used to achieve
crisp lines where glaze is not wanted.
7) Make sure to wipe off any glaze from
the bottom with a damp sponge and
fire again at 1040ยฐC.
Follow the same glazing and firing
process with your pinch pot.
