Product Information

As the name suggests, it is ground animal bones and is sometimes called calcium phosphate. Within a glaze, it can create a semi-opaque, soft, iridescent surface but will opacify at high firing temperatures. Often used in clay in porcelain to create translucency.

Health & Safety

Bone Ash is irritant to both skin and eyes. Wear a mask, gloves and glasses. Do not use in a domestic environment and eat or drink in your workspace. Keep working areas free of dust cleaning up with a damp sponge.

In keeping with our overall general advice, we suggest wearing full PPE when handling any of our raw materials. This includes a FFP3/P3 mask, safety glasses, and gloves. We also suggest working in a well-ventilated area.

It is a sensible precaution for children not to work with raw materials.
