1) Roll out 1kg of clay and allow to dry to a leather-hard
state (firm enough to move without leaving finger marks).
2) Using a dinner plate as a template, cut out a large
circle of clay.
3) Cover an upturned bowl (breakfast or soup bowls work
well) with cling film.
4) Drape the clay circle over the upside down bowl, and
let it ‘flop’ into a shallow shape. The clay can be gently
manipulated into the desired curvy shape.
5) Allow the clay to dry over the bowl until it no longer
easily bends, but is also not completely dry. Flip the clay
over, and using a slightly damp sponge, rub over the clay
to smooth out any marks.
6) Allow to dry out completely and bisque fire to 1100°C.
7) Using masking tape, mark out a pattern leaving areas
to be glazed. Ensure the tape is stuck down firmly to
create crisp glaze lines.
8) Brush on 2-3 coats of chosen colours of Vitraglaze and
allow to dry before removing tape.
9) Add extra detail using more strips of masking tape and
using a circular template draw circles using a pencil (any
visible pencil marks will burn out during firing) carefully
fill in with 2-3 coats of glaze.
10) Allow glaze to dry and fire to 1040°C.
