Product Description:

This traditional shiny green celadon becomes more varied at the higher end of the firing range, where it reveals brown to green mottle.

Firing Range:

1220°C to 1280°C (Cone 6 to Cone 9). The sample shows one and two coats on Vitraclay, White Throwing Clay, fired to 1260°C.

Working Notes:

  • When fired in the lower end of the range, the glaze will have the traditional shiny translucent jade green appearance of a celadon, pooling to deep green where the glaze is thicker.
  • At higher temperatures the glaze begins to react with the iron in the clay body and will deepen and speckle, it may show toasty edges with some bodies.

These notes are continuously updated so please send us your feedback.

Studio Safety:

Vitraglaze is lead free and non-toxic. Good housekeeping is essential in any pottery studio to minimise inhalation of silica dust. Always clean up with a damp sponge and if any dust is airborne, such as when mixing powder glazes, wear an FFP3 mask.

Preparing Powder Glaze:

Always wear a mask when mixing powdered glaze. Glaze should be added to water according to the instructions. Mix glaze for at least 10 minutes, sieve the liquid glaze using an 80 mesh screen, working all the material through the sieve using a stiff brush. The glaze mix should have a creamy viscosity, remember it’s easier to thin a glaze so begin with a thicker mix than you expect.

Applying Brush on Glaze:

Stir glaze thoroughly as components of glaze may settle, avoid shaking the pot as this may cause the lid to become difficult to open next time you use the glaze. Brush glaze using a flat well loaded brush, apply 2 to 3 even coats of glaze in different directions, one after the other.
