1) Take a small amount of clay and roll it into a ball that
fits just inside your palm.
2) Gently push your thumb into the centre of the clay
and pinch between the finger and thumb.
work from the centre, out towards the edges.
3) As the bowl begins to form, support it in the palm of
your opposite hand while gently smoothing into a
bowl shape, try to keep the walls as even as possible.
The bowl does not need to be perfectly round!
4) Once the bowl shape is formed and walls are an
even thickness all the way around, it can be gently
pulled into the desired shape.
1) On a large piece of paper (or baking parchment),
draw the outline of the desired shape for your cheese
board and cut it out.
2) Using rolling guides, roll out around 1kg clay. Allow
the clay to dry to a leather hard state (firm to the touch
but still has a bend in it).
3) Using your paper cut out as a template, mark the
outline and cut out the clay. Using a round cutter,
cut out a hole (it can be used for hanging the board
for storage or for placing the chutney bowl in when
serving).
4) Add texture to the surface using a texture mat.
*Tip… When placing the mat, try and line up the
pattern with matching size shapes to achieve
continuity in the pattern (as you would when
hanging patterned wall paper).
5) Run a wet finger around the edge of the cheese
board for a nice, smooth edge.
Allow the clay to dry completely before bisque
firing at 1100°C
6) After bisque firing apply 2-3 coats of VitraGlaze
Earthenware glaze, making sure to wipe off any
glaze from the bottom with a damp sponge and
fire again at 1040°C.
Follow the same firing process with your pinch
pot. The Glazes used here are VitraGlaze
Earthenware White Zircon and Butterscotch.
